Boys Varsity Soccer vs. Bedford Senior High School

Win: 1 - 0
In the first ever play off game staged at the High School Monroe Boys' soccer prevailed over Bedford by a score of 1-0 on Wednesday evening . The game was played in a stiff breeze and occasional showers and the wet surface made controlling the ball tricky in the early going. Monroe seemed to adjust to the conditions better and the Trojans created the majority of chances in the first half with excellent crosses from wide areas by Daniel Presa and Ashton Walker presenting problems for the Bedford defense. Bryson Lane twice went close to scoring and Talen Swinkey forced a good save from the Bedford keeper. Bedford were dangerous from set pieces and a brilliant reflex save from Nick Braden prevented the visitors from opening the scoring. Half time 0-0. Monroe continued to dominate possession in the second half limiting Bedford to occasional counterattacks. At the back Lucis Rzepa and Manuel Diaz did an outstanding job marshalling Bedford's main striker. The breakthrough finally came with 12 minutes remaining when a pass by Jovanny Gallegos  found Ashton Walker on the right side.Walkers cross to the far post drifted over the keepers head and into the far corner.  The boys were able to see out the reminder of the game and enjoy a well earned victory. A great night for the program and the occasion was made more special by the support of so many Trojan fan and the rousing contributions of the marching band.  A memorable night of soccer at  Bunkelman Field. Next game: District semi final vs Woodhaven (at Woodhaven) 6:00pm Monday October 17

Lose: 1 - 3
Monroe Boys' varsity soccer team wound up their league season with a 3-1 defeat at home to Skyline. It was an eventful game with a reshuffled team for the Trojans.  Despite having regulars Lucis Rzepa, Talen Swinkey, and Trevor Mann unavailable and several players carrying knocks, the team still manged to provide a stern test for the visitors. The result was overshadowed by the unfortunate loss of Logan Janes to a season ending broken collar bone in the first half. Behind 2-0 at the half the lads rallied after the break and pulled a goal back through Austin Dunn who intercepted a pass and drilled home from the edge of the box. Good performances from Nik Heringhausen and Manuel Diaz in the back and Nick Lieto and Alex Gawel up front. Freshman Tobin Becker was rescued from the bleachers at half time as the team was down to a single sub and he made his varsity debut in the second half. Skyline added a third late in the game but still a worthy performance in adverse circumstances for the Trojans. Final 1-3 Next game vs Bedford (first round of districts)  Wednesday October 19 KO 7:30 at Bunkelman Field

Win: 3 - 2
Monroe Boys' soccer finally secured an SEC league win with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Lincoln at Bunkelman Field on Tuesday night. Despite 3 hard games in 4 days the boys showed few signs of fatigue in a dominating first half and should have entered the break with more than one goal to show for their efforts. Alex Gawel scoring with a  cool volley to finish off a pass from Ashton Walker. In the second half Monroe again had the majority of possession but before they could add to their advantage Lincoln equalized from a corner kick. The Trojans again took the lead when Brian Palmer fired in to the corner of the net following a wild sequence of passes and rebounds. Jovanny Gallegos with the assist. A third goal came after Bryson Lane was chopped down in  midfield and from the resulting free kick Talen Swinkey floated a ball on to Austin Dunn's head at the far post. His header was palmed onto the crossbar by the keeper and Lucis Rzepa tapped home the rebound. The boys efforts of the previous four days started to catch up with them in the last 10 minutes. A late goal was conceded but over the 80 minutes the Trojans were much the better team and the win was thoroughly well deserved. Final score 3-2

After a first half in which Monroe held the upper hand but could only muster a single goal from Brian Palmer following a Talen Swinkey pass, the Trojans pulled away with 5 second half strikes. Lose: 1 - 1
Monroe Boys' varsity soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Bedford in the first ever night game at Bunkelman Field on Thursday night. The team began on the front foot and kept Bedford in their own half for much of the opening 20 minutes. Brian Palmer opened the scoring when he outran the defense after a ball from Austin Dunn and neatly placed the ball into the far corner. Monroe continued to carry the initiative until half time but did not add to the scoreline. HT 1-0 Monroe had the lions share of  possession in the second period and created some dangerous situations but the final ball and cross was disappointing at times. Against the run of play Bedford equalized from a well placed free kick that created some confusion in the box and the ball was turned over the line. Monroe rallied and, apart from a couple of counterattacks by the visitors, continued to push forward and looked the more likely team to score. The Trojans thought they had snatched a late winner when Talen Swinkey curled in a free kick around the defensive wall with 30 seconds left on the clock but the kick was ordered to be retaken by the referee. The second attempt also beat the keeper but hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced out. Bedford scrambled the ball away as time expired. Very entertaining game and one of the best performances of the season by the Trojan soccer team. Next game Monroe Invitational vs Ypsilanti Saturday September 24 KO 11:30 at Bunkelman Field.

It was a case of deja vu all over again for the Monroe boys' soccer team as they conceded two late goals in Thursday nights game against Ann Arbor Huron. In a repeat of Tuesdays game with Saline it had been an enthralling back and forth contest for the first 70 minutes with Monroe having several clear chances on the day. Brian Palmer and Jovanny Gallegos both went close to opening the scoring and Austin Dunn had a goal disallowed for being marginally offside following a Talen Swinkey free kick. At the other end Nick Braden in goal put in another excellent performance pulling off several fine saves to keep the Trojan goal intact. It was a disappointing result to open up the new era at Bunkelman Field  but the boys put up a spirited fight against a very talented and deep squad. Talen Swinkey, Logan Janes, and Bryson Lane all had strong games for the Trojans. Next game vs Riverview (A) on Saturday August 27 Kick off 8:00am.

Monroe Boys' varsity soccer pushed Saline to the limit before finally falling 0-3 on Tuesday night at Custer Stadium. Depleted through several injures and illness the Trojan's squad nonetheess matched Saline for an hour before their all time leading scorer Christian Rossi broke the deadlock with a clever back heel goal. The back line of Matt Grenn, Lucas Rzepa Trevor Mann and Logan Janes had defended extremely well up to that point and Trevor Mann had done an excellent job of marking Rossi. In midfield Austin Dunn and Daniel Presa had another fine game and Dunn was denied a goal in the first half by a finger tip save at fulll stretch by Hornet's keepr.Riley Behrman. Talen Swinkey's presence lifted the team on his welcome return from injury and Geovanny Gallegos worked tirelsssly up front. The depth and quality of Saline's 23 man roster showed in the final minutes as Monroe conceded two late goals to give the vistors a deserved but hard earned victory. Austin Dunn then fired home from the edge of the box after a flowing move involving several players to make it 2-0.  After providing Dunn's assist Jovanny Gallegos then laid on Talen Swinkey who evaded a couple of challenges and struck right footed shot into the net to make it 3-0. Shortly before half time Bryson Lane calmly chested down Matt Grenn's cross and thumped the ball home with his right foot.
